Beneath the Iron Sky
To the top of Paris 💗
I stood where the mighty tower rose from the ground, Its arches stretched wide in a circle around Like lace forged from iron, both graceful and grand, A masterpiece reaching from earth to the land I tilted my head and just stared up in awe, At the countless steel patterns and details I saw The higher it climbed, the smaller I felt, Yet wonder was all that my heart truly held Step after step on the winding ascent, Each landing revealed a new marvel well spent The city grew wider with every new view, As rooftops and rivers emerged into view The sounds of the streets slowly faded away, Replaced by the whispers of soft Paris gray The higher I wandered, the more I could see, As though all of Paris was waiting for me Then upward I soared in the elevator’s flight, Through a framework of iron and streams of sunlight The tower still climbed as the city fell small, Till clouds seemed to linger just beyond it all And there from the summit I gazed all around, At a kingdom of beauty stretched out from the ground The Seine wound below like a ribbon of gold, Through stories and centuries silently told The rooftops were scattered like pieces of art, Each street and each garden a beat of one heart And standing above it, suspended in air, I felt like forever was waiting up there Yet nothing compared to the fall of the night, When Paris awakened in rivers of light The city below wore a glittering glow, Like stars had descended to dance far below Then suddenly, softly, a shimmer took flight, The tower erupted in diamonds of light A thousand bright sparkles burst into the sky, As gasps of amazement drifted nearby The iron colossus transformed before me, From monument grand to pure magic set free It twinkled and danced like a heavenly stream, Too wondrous for words and too perfect a dream And there in that moment I quietly knew, Some places are far more than postcards or views For the Eiffel at night leaves a mark on your soul, A memory that time can never control Though years may go by and new journeys unfold, That sparkling bright tower will never grow old For somewhere within me, Paris still gleams, A city of wonder, of light, and of dreams

April Gough 🦄, the poem carries a clear sense of wonder as the Eiffel Tower moves from iron structure to living memory. The images of lace forged from iron, the Seine like a ribbon of gold, and the tower erupting in diamonds of light give the piece its visual lift. I especially appreciate the way the ascent changes the speaker’s sense of scale, making Paris feel both grand and intimate from above. Thank you for sharing a reflection filled with awe, travel memory, and affection for a city that continues to gleam long after the visit ends.
