Fears
~Written in 10th grade, 2002~
My love for you is more than words
Your hate for me, it really hurts
I see it in your eyes, the way that you look
I don’t understand, why can’t we make this work
I hear your friends, they laugh and joke
It will be over soon, I really do hope
I listen to the rumors, the lies, my fears
They’re all around, I know you hear
So why did you listen to your friends, the lies?
Why won’t you realize and open your eyes
Just take me back, I need you tonight
We can make this work, every day and night

April Gough 🦄, there is something meaningful about letting a poem from tenth grade remain in its original emotional register. The repetition, urgency, and directness feel true to that age, when heartbreak can become a whole weather system and other people’s laughter or rumors can feel impossible to escape. What I appreciate most is the preservation of the younger voice without trying to over-edit her into adulthood. Grateful for the vulnerability in sharing the archive of who you were and letting readers see how early the work of naming hurt began.
I love this. 10 year old you must be so proud of today you 🍀🫶🏼
