The Heart They Remembered
When I die, this is what I hope happens.
I never dreamed of crowns or gold, Or statues standing proud and tall I only hoped my heart would leave, Some trace of love behind it all Through weary halls and hospital light, I held the hands of grief and pain I learned that kindness softly given, Can help a shattered soul remain And when the long hard shifts would end, When silence filled the midnight air I turned my aching heart to verse, And poured compassion everywhere I wrote for those who felt unseen, For lonely hearts afraid to speak For tired souls the world ignored, For gentle people worn and weak I know a poem cannot stop - The wars or hatred men create But every fire begins somewhere, And love can still change human fate So if one day my name survives, Inside some old and weathered book I hope they will not speak of fame, Before they speak of how I looked - Upon this broken world with love, And chose compassion every time A nurse with tenderness in hand, A wounded soul who learned to rhyme And maybe long after I’m gone, When newer voices fill the sky A stranger somewhere filled with pain, Will read my words and choose not to die They’ll choose to love. They’ll choose to stay. Will rise again though hope seemed small And then perhaps my quiet life, Will not have been so small after all
